Kicking off the Summer here in Berlin with a mini-fest at Schokoladen in Mitte, M:Soundtrack presents a small showcase of ace local bands, in the courtyard on what’s going to inevitably be a lovely sunny day. 5 bands for just 5€, even that fact alone makes it so you couldn’t dare stay at home.
mOck (bln) // deliver an intricate brand of post-whatever, and are releasing their debut full length, mixed by John McEntire (Tortoise), in february 2012, offering the style of oblique smart rock which they know best.
The Dropout Patrol (bln) // Beginning as front-woman Jana’s solo project for 10 years, but having slowly evolved into a full band since then, the dropout patrol play rusty, diverse sadrock not unlike early cat power, karate or a more mellow des ark. The debut full length from them is recorded and will be out in late august on altin Village + Exotic Fever Records (vinyl).
Young Hare (Frankfort) // Young Hare’s music oscillates between dream-pop, post-punk, tropical and kraut, ‘bringing summer back’, similar to Washed Out or Wild Nothing, conjuring images of sunny days. Their debut cassette tape, out through Frankfurt DIY label Unbreakmyheart, sold out super quickly and the new EP should be out shortly.
SISSTERS (bln) // SISSTERS sound fragile and emotional yet also angry and abrasive with traditional song structures tending to be dismantled and dissolved, they still achieve reconciliation in their sound. Building on a foundation of stripped down to-the-point drums, the guitar while being rhythmically complex comes across as hectic, making it a perfect match for the often hysterical vocals. Not trying to fit any prefabricated genre formula, SISSTERS just take what they need and run with it and finding bands to compare their music to is not easy, Ex-Models have been mentioned along with Shellac and early Birthday Party.
